Curly or Straight?

Here's the deal. My hair is naturally curly. I know some of you may be surprised by that. Cuz you've only seen it straight. I love the straight look. But it's work to get it that way. A lot. My hair is very thick so to get it straight means using special products, blow drying out the curl, and then using a hot iron to flatten it. Very high maintenance and it's time consuming. Here's what it looks like straight. Not a flattering pic of us but it's a good hair shot to illustrate my point. (Yes, that's my homegirl, Melissa, that I so affectionately have my arm around. Even though she trashed me on her blog today. LOL! And there's Alison, too.)

Well, I've been doing this routine for the last four years. The last time I went to the hairdresser she held up a very short patch of hair near my part. She said "What happened here?" Of course, I had no idea. She informed me that I was frying my hair off with the hot iron. Uhhh.... that can't be good. Didn't mean to do that. So I'm trying out a new look. I decided maybe I need to work with what I have and stop fighting it. I'm giving the hair a break from the hot iron/blow dryer for awhile and trying to work with my natural curl. Check it out. I felt like I needed to be holding a number up in front of me when Connie took this pic. LOL!

Here's a close up. It doesn't photograph as well as it looks in real life. The weird thing is that it grows from the root straight. Then starts to get wavy. Then the longest part at the ends is curly.
A view from the back too. Look how curly the long part is. Just weird. The good news is that this is really easy to do. Just wash and let air dry. Scrunch it up a little, spray it and go. I think wearing it like this will give it some time to repair itself. But I may still pull out the hot iron on occasion. I wore it to work like this most of the week. It's a lot easier to deal with curly that's for sure. It can get windblown and still look great. The humidity no longer matters cuz it just makes it curlier.
I took a poll. Ninety percent voted for curly. The other ten percent said they like it both ways. No one voted for only straight all the time. WTF?! Funny though... ALL the men voted curly. Think that's some wild sexual fantasy or something? With straight hair I appear more conservative and reserved? But with the curly tousled look I'm so much more sexy and provocative? Hmmm......works for me! But seriously...what do you guys think? Give me your honest opinions. Even if it's bad. I can take it.
Curly or straight?

I vote for whatever is easiest and still looks good, so that means go curly, girl. Straight was nice and you always looked very "finished". Curly is a little more spontaneous and wild, which fits your personality. Change is good (says the woman who hasn't changed her hair style in years)!

I too like it both ways but would go for the easiest especially once Mia is home :)

I vote curly - you'll always be able to flat iron on occasion. That is what I do. I've struggled forever with the curly/straight - I love the wash and go, especially in the heat!

You are lucky that it looks good both ways. Since it's a lot of work to make it straight, and since it's damaging your hair to do so, maybe you should wear it curly most of the time. You can always straighten it for special occasions, like a date or girls' night out!

As I've gotten older, my hair has become sort of wavy and curly, especially when I'm in a humid climate. So, during the summer I rarely blow it dry. I just let it dry on its own and become curly. I get a lot of compliments when I do that.

Ok....I like it straight best but since your hair needs a break from the heat and products you need to let it go curly and that looks good too.

I think I don't like the length with the waves/curls... it doesn't look as current as it does when its straight. Maybe a little less length with more layers??

I think you are beautiful no matter which way you wear your hair!

I just did a post pretty much exactly like this not long ago!!! I too was surprised by everyone's answers!!

I LOVE your hair straight!! But then again..I'm naturally curly too and so I love straight!! lol

I also know how hard that is to accomplish though!! Especially in any kind of humidity!!!

Both are beautiful though!! I love your hair actually!!

I also REALLY like it both ways...

and I know what ya mean!! I have VERY curly hair and I straighten it everyday. That was part of the reason I cut it so short.. it's much faster to straighten this length than when it was so long. And I like mine better curly when its short!!

As for the flat iron, my hairdresser recommended I buy a really good one that would not burn my hair. So I cringed, but spent the $170 on a Chi flat iron... BEST MONEY I EVER SPENT!!

I like both! I think you should do curly most of the time, though, and just straighten it when you want something special. That way it gives your hair a "break". (no pun intended) I have been trying not to flat-iron my hair too, because my hair is so fine that it's breaking it.

Your hair is gorgeous, and SO ARE YOU!!!!

I think you look beautiful both ways!!! My vote is to go for easy and straight for special times.

So Wonderful to hang out Saturday. Look forward to the next time.

I'm thinking you could be a swinger. Naw, not that kind of swinger, but the kind that allows you to be a curly girl M-F and a straight kind of girl on Sat-Sun. You really can wear it both ways. I like straight much better on myself, but I do curly in the summer and straight in the winter. I'll spare you with my long explaination. I should do this post cuz I wonder how ridiculous my hair looks curly. The hubs never has good things to say about the curly look. He thinks I just got out of bed and did nothing....which is usually true. ;0)

I honestly think it looks fab both ways. But if I have to pick, I'd go with curly. Basically because I have naturally stick-straight-no-body hair and I have curl envy.

I'd go with curly.

I like it both ways..
My favorite would be curly..Only because I have to pay to have a little curl, then it only last about 2 months..(I have baby fine, straight hair)

The free-flowing curly look is so in for this fall. It looks beautiful both ways, but if the curly look is easier and it looks THAT sweet AND it is the IN thing for fall, then curl it up, my dear!

I say curly if it is easier, but you are beautiful either way!

It looks great both ways, but I would go with curly.

I like it both ways! But hey if curly is easy to to then I vote for that! And on special events go straight!

I like it both ways, but with straight being my favorite. I'm so jealous of people that can wear their hair straight like that....mine looks horrible...I need some "pouf" in my hair. However...curly is so much easier to do...and I'm all about the easy part. Maybe if you cut a few inches off it would be less wavy and more curly closer to the roots. Could be the weight of your hair is pulling it down...but what do I know? I'm no hairdresser (as you can tell!)

Well, the group has spoken...curly it is. I'm with that too. It looks more 'real' and I'm a fan of a not overly polished look. But, of course it looks great straight too but it's just a pain in the arse.

I'll pull out the flat iron now and then but since I want to keep my hair and not fry it off it won't be often. Besides, I'm the type of active that doesn't want to hold back from things so I don't mess up my hair.

I say go curly and get squirrely ;0)

PS - I can still genuflect, smart ass ;0)

I vote curly.(I like the straight look but who the heck has that much time) Besides, when Mia gets here, you won't have time for all that straightening hoohah!

As for the men liking the curly hair.. my husband would agree. He always loved mine long and curly. (yes, I used to have very long hair) He said the curly look was the JBF look. (I'm assuming a hip gal like you knows what JBF means)

I wrestle with the same dilemma, being a naturally curly girl myself. I think you've got great hair either way, but I'm going with the majority here and vote for curly!

I like it both ways. You're a cutie, K!!

Let go & let the curls flow. I think it looks fabulous =)

I've got some good product recommendations, too. It's difficult to find a good mix. E mail me if u want, I'm more than willing to share.

I feel so very sexy & provocative now . . .

I vote for whatever is easier and makes you happy :-) I think you are cute either way!

You are so lucky! It is so versatile and looks great both ways. I like Tracy`s idea. Flat iron for special times. Regular days, curly sue!

Mine is straight. Curling it makes it curl for like 1 minute then back to straight. I flat iron it on the weekend or going out to make it sleek and straighter. It has just a tiniest wave that drives me Nuckin Futs!

You look smashing!

Keep smilin!

I vote for 5 minute hair!!! That's my position with my own hair, I would rather sleep than do hair! Ha! I like both looks, so go with what feels good and what is easy!!!

I like it both ways. I think the straight looks more formal, professional. The wavy looks like weekend fun.

I seriously like it both ways - but since this is the first time I'm seeing it curly, I have to say I REALLY like it curly. However... if you're looking for the ultimate straightening iron, just ask Kristen from Sense In It All... She got hers from her hair stylist and paid a small fortune for it, but that girl was ready in a flash when she stayed here for the weekend, and I swear to you her hair was like silk - I was in shock at how healthy it was after "frying" it...lol.

But I have to say curly if I had to choose....

I have to blow my hair straight every single day too so I completely understand. I happen to like the curly look on you but NEVER on me.
Go with curly, you sexy provocative thang you.
As for the occasional flat iron, no biggy.

Carla said...

I always liked your hair straight so that would get my vote. Knowing what a PITA it is to straighten my hair though, I would go with curly for ease. That's what I've been doing since my blow dryer croaked. :op

Love it straight and love it curly! But now that I am a mama, I say take the easy path!

Coming from a natural curly girl, it IS SO MUCH easier fixing it curly! I try every once in a while to straighten mine, but it gets old really quick! Looks great!
